Scalo Farini competition

Category
Competition project
Location

Year
2022

A proposal for the international competition to regenerate Scalo Farini, a 618,000 m² disused railway yard north of Milan.

The project rejects the idea of a masterplan resolved in defined phases. It proposes instead a continuous vegetal infrastructure, built first, structuring ground and water before any construction. The park is not the space left over between buildings: it is the public work that precedes them and sets their rules.

Planting is calibrated to projected 2050 temperatures rather than current ones: deciduous species on south fronts, dense shading along east-west routes, and a sequence of retention basins sized for intense rainfall events.

Buildings occupy 38% of the area, concentrated at edges already served by public transport. The historic rail alignment remains legible as the park’s principal axis.
